Department of Housing (DOH) is seeking Student Interns who want to acquire knowledge and valuable work experience in public sector/City government operations while assisting with various duties in the Office of Community Engagement, Racial Equity, and Strategic Initiatives, and support projects in other DOH bureaus. The Office of Community Engagement, Racial Equity, and Strategic Initiatives heads the racial justice work for DOH; organizes and participates in engagement and outreach events; coordinates and manages eight community programs and 49 delegate agencies; and aligns department-wide priorities with the Mayor’s Office, City agencies, and sister agencies. As a Student Intern, you will gain a unique insight into how government can develop processes to gain public feedback and implement policy using a racial equity and climate-resilient lens. The ideal student is highly motivated and dedicated to improving public service while obtaining “hands-on” work experience in a fast-paced environment. It is anticipated that the Student Interns will begin temporary employment positions based on their availability with either the summer term or the academic year term (beginning September 2023).
Internships are limited to one academic year. Students are limited to working one internship (lasting no more than one academic year) per City department
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Performs various administrative and office clerical functions to support program activities
- Manages stakeholder lists and identifies grant opportunities for community organizations
- Supports housing outreach and logistics of racial equity policy planning
- Synthesizes data, researches policy, and drafts policy documents
- Operates various software to author documents, create spreadsheets, and capture data
- Participates in the design, set-up, and administration of special events and program activities
Additional duties may be required for this position
Location: City Hall, 10th Floor (occasional City-wide travel may be required)
Days: Varies Monday – Friday, based on candidate availability
Hours: Varies, at least 20 hours per week during regular business hours
THIS POSITION IS EXEMPT FROM THE CAREER SERVICE
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be a student in good academic standing currently enrolled in an accredited college, university, or law school OR a student in good academic standing currently enrolled in an accredited business or data processing/information technology school. Must have a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 on a 4.0 grading scale or 3.5 on a 5.0 grading scale.
- Students must maintain the required GPA throughout the duration of their employment/internship
- Students must be enrolled in school with a minimum of 6 credit hours (or quarter hour equivalency) throughout the duration of the internship, with the exception of academic breaks, i.e. summer

NOTE: Applicants selected to interview will be required to submit an academic writing sample at the time of interview
SELECTION REQUIREMENTS
This position requires applicants to complete an interview which will include a skills assessment as part of the interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the oral and written parts of the interview will be selected.
Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:
- Availability for one (1) year
- Available to work at least 20 hours per week
